The Sky-Dancing "King" of Sportfishing (Please Note: Some of this information only applies in New York and/or the United States)
This great battler, famous for its skyrocketing jumps and long slashing runs. A great all around fish.
Spring and fall months are the best when surface water temperatures are cool. During these periods, salmon are found on or close to the surface and can be caught with light tackle or by fly fishing. In the warm summer months, fishing remains good but fish go deep into cooler water. Trolling with light tackle on downriggers or wire line is recommended at this time.Spring: Fishing starts with ice-out and remains good into late June. Salmon hot spots are in-shore around smelt spawning streams. Casting from shore or trilling and drift-trolling in 5-35 of water produces most fish. Summer: Salmon will be found 35-90 down. To reach these depths, it is necessary to troll with wire, leadcore, or light talk on a downrigger. And, while not absolutely necessary, an electronic fish finder will help locate fish and greatly improve your chances of taking salmon. Fall: Salmon return to the surface around mid-September and offer great light tackle fishing until freeze up in late December. Fish will be scattered over the lake at this time and are best taken by sweep-trolling on the surface down to 40. A good bet during early morning and late afternoon is to troll and drift-troll inshore around streams and drop-off structure
Baits: Live and dead bait (lip-hooked for drift trolling, sewn for sweep trolling). Lures: Smelt pattern streamer (single or tandem hook), 3-5" spoon (flutter and beaded), 3-6" Rapala-type and flatfish-type plug, lead-fish, jigging spoon. Check with local bait/tackle shops for recommended baits/lures and colors.
