Lake Champlain -
Fair-Catching walleyes on crank baits and Rapalas. The catfish continue to hit well on
worms and minnows. Salmon and lake trout are being caught above the Crown Point
Bridge. This would be a good choice for the opener.A number of smallmouth being taken on
jigs and top-water baits. Still plenty of pike action.
Lake George - Fair-Lakers are
being caught in 60 - 95 feet of water, the bestbait is a Les Davis sun flasher with a J -
11 jointed Rapala or a flat fish. Salmon are being caught drifting a live bait early in
the morning, or trolling a Mooselook wobbler or J - 50 joined rainbow Rebel. Salmon
also in the first 20 feet of water on streamer flies or stingers.Lake George has a great
population of small mouth bass, many consider it to be one of the
best in the state. On Saturday, try for large mouth in 5-15 feet using shiners over the
weedbeds.
Battenkill - Fair-Normal and
clear. Caddis in brown, olive and tan.Sulfur duns, gray fox, and some march browns. Light
Achilles and blue winged olives. Red brown spinners in the evening.
Saratoga Lake - Fair-Our
early season bass strategy will be trying a Zara spook lure
across the surface over the top of weeds for large mouth. Switch to plastic later in
the day. Also, visit Mike at the Lake Lonely Boat Livery and pick up the new
Saratoga Lake map. Walleye are stilling being caught in the evening, outside the weed line
in about 14 feet of water. Bluegills are being caught on worms and grubs.
Northern pike are still hitting on live bait. This is a great spot for large mouth
bass. Try the weed edges and under docks.
Mohawk River - Fair-Try
crawfish for smallmouth in 5-15 feet and you cannot miss. Top-water lures early in
the morning also a good bet. Pike and tiger musky good between lock 7-8. Walleye are
still hard to find, but a few near lock 7 on live bait. Catching small mouth bass
near the lock in the spillway. Bouncing crawdads on the bottom. Another good spot for
bass.
Hudson River - Fair-Catching
small mouth bass on bouncing crawdads on the bottom. This would be a good bet for
the opener. There is excellent fishing for both small and large mouth bass. On
Saturday, try leeches and hellgrammites along the bottom for bass.
