The Essence of Fishing

by Fred Johnson, Our Senior Writer

Fishing is so much more than casting and retrieving a lure and playing your catch.

It's being on the water at first light to see the rising sun poke over the horizon.

It's hearing the morning sounds of awakening birds as you prepare to leave the launch area.

It's feeling the warming rays of the sun on a frigid morning.

It's seeing the moon and the sun in the same sky.

It's a gently breeze on your face on humid day.

It's the recuperative powers of time spent on the water alone.

It's looking up at a billion stars on a moonlit night.

It's fighting the storm driven waves in the hope of getting back to the dock safely.

It's bragging about the big one that didn't get away.

It's not having your bug repellent on a hot July evening.

It's the cherished time with friends pursuing a hobby they all enjoy.

It's the challenge of first finding and then trying to outwit your quarry.

It's a deep appreciation when you observe a doe and a fawn at dusk, along the waters edge.

It's being aware of your surroundings so you don't impact the environment in a negative manner.

It's discovering the magic in each new place and unlocking the mysteries that lurk there, both about and below the surface.

Fishing is these things and so much more.

It's said. "The time spent fishing does not count toward the longevity of ones life span", lets hope their right......
